Loyola Medicine supports nurses through the first year of employment using the resources and expertise of more experienced nurses to teach and mentor the newest members of our profession. We are committed to the professional development of our nurses at every level of practice.

Program Requirements:

  • Candidates must have a validIllinoisRN license verified by theIDFPRwebsite bytimeof Start Date. The new graduate nurse may apply for this position prior to completing licenserequirements, butwill be unable to begin work untillicenseis obtained.

  • Candidates must have graduated within the last 12 months and can only have worked as an RN in any capacity no more than within the last12months of beginning of program start.

  • Candidates must have graduated from an accreditedBSN/MSN.***ADNgraduatesconsidered if a current colleague employed by Loyola Medicine.Graduates with an ADN will need to complete BSN within3 years ofemployment

  • Must possess a BLS CPR card through American Heart Association.

The Registered Nurse 1 (RN 1) functions to protect, promote and optimize health and abilities of those in their care. They work to prevent illness and injury, facilitate healing, and alleviate suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, groups, communities and populations. They execute their duties through clinical and professional practice standards. Nursing practices evolves over time as one gains experience and knowledge through clinical practice and ongoing learning. The Registered Nurse 1 is a novice nurse working toward competency within the first 18 months of practice.

Clinical Practice. Uses the nursing process (Assessment, Diagnosis, Planning, Implementation/Coordination/Teaching and Promotion, Evaluation) to guide practice and respond to patient needs.

  • The RN 1 gathers pertinent data and information relative to patients' health status and needs and analyzes the assessment data to determine actual or potential diagnoses, problems or issues.
  • The RN 1 identifies expected outcomes or goals of care based on a plan to individualize care and in collaboration with patients, families, groups, communities or populations served.
  • The RN 1 develops a plan that prescribes strategies to attain expected outcomes or goals.
  • Nurses systematically implement the individualized care plan, facilitated the coordination of care with inter and intra-professional colleagues and employs strategies for health teaching and promotion.
  • The RN 1 must evaluate progress toward achieving defined outcomes/goals and change the plan if necessary.
